I planted a little tree over her. I hope it lives forever. The last couple days were tough; she hadn’t eaten more than a nibble in three weeks or more. At full weight, she was like 11 lbs, at the end she was less than 5.5. She’s been with me most of my adult life. The head knew it was time, but the heart still has second thoughts.

She came into my life when she was about 5-6 weeks old, having survived a trip under the hood of a car. I promised her safety, comfort, and love. I hope I lived up to my end. She more than lived up to hers.

Shit, I'm so sorry. I got a similar tree over my big girl we lost earlier this year (scaled up to the size of a 95lb doggo). I hope it gets easier for you to remember the good times without the hurt of the end

You did an amazing thing giving her a safe, happy life full of love. I’m so sorry that it’s over. It sucks that the flip side of how much you love her is how much it hurts now that she’s gone , but that’s how our hearts work. I hope tonight you can take a little time to appreciate all the great things you’ve done for her. Good luck; the first weeks after are so hard.

She did, and it was time for her. Living in pain is no life, and the past couple days she was barely able to jump up on the couch. Carrying her little body outside to bury her was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Yeah. I had to carry her still-warm body out, after I’d dug the hole, to plant a little tree. She’s been my best friend for 14 years. A tiny, scared and traumatized kitten at lik e 5 weeks old, and she showed up in the place I was working, after I’d  moved to Austin alone, and when she climbed up on my shoulder, I said, “well, I guess you’re coming home with me.”

Best I could do. Wish it were a flowering bottlebrush, but I’ll take longevity over everything at this point.

I am so sorry for your loss. We had to say goodbye to our cat Calvin back at Halloween. He lost a lot of weight in his final year after having kidney disease and a prescription food that he hated.

It sounds like you did the best that you could for her.

20 years ago I lost my best buddy. Buried her under a tree in the back yard of the house I was renting at the time. Visited her grave a month or so ago on a whim. The tree Tinker Dirt Motorhead is buried under is a bit bigger now but undisturbed. While I stood there the owners came home (no longer a rental) and asked why I was standing in their backyard. I pointed to her grave and told them of our adventures. 20, 30 minutes we stood there while they listened. We were all tearful by the end. Tinker has new caretakers now.

Today I have 2 beautiful sisters that I love as much and have done so for 12-years. Th ey, too, will leave me some day and I’ll grieve but I wouldn’t want to miss the time we’ve had together. Th is is the cycle of life.

I did everything I could have, for her. She was the best life partner anyone could’ve hoped for. She kept me alive from 27-41. Her leaving... I dunno what I’m gonna do. Just have to figure it out as we go.

It takes a long time, and we never really get over them. But my advice is to embrace how you feel right now. Don't try to push it down and act like it doesn't hurt. Give yourself the chance to grieve.

dogs man....

anyhoo got 3 cats now (oldest of wich is 14....ish)

i think i will steal your idea and plant trees when they go

(dusty got buried underneath me dads favourite pine tree..... we used to sit out there and watch thunderstorms... coz yeah its a tree but the view is fantastic and we’re at the edge of a forest what are the odds of this tree getting hit)

I’m so sorry for your loss. That’s a swe et gesture to plant that tree, and I hope that it grows strong and provides memories for you, and shelter for other animals forever.

I’m in my 60's now so I’ve lost parents, friends and pets. I grieve for all of them. It gets no easier with age. I have to learned to enjoy, be present for, the friends and pets that I have now much more than I did when I was younger.
